Academics

The HTI winter hockey academy provides an all-inclusive environment for student-athletes with a fundamental balance between hockey and education. We expect equal dedication and achievement in the classroom and on the ice. It is imperative to our program that players develop both academically and athletically to provide them with more opportunities in post-secondary education.

To accommodate the extensive travel involved in competing at the most elite level, we use an online format of education through Virtual High School. This setup is the ideal counterpart for our training purposes because it allows students to study, submit assignments, and take exams at any time of day and from any location as long as they have access to the internet.

All classes are organized and implemented by certified teachers employed by VHS. These teachers can be reached at any time via email or phone correspondence, and replies are guaranteed within 24 hours. All lectures, readings, and learning materials are included – no additional textbooks or learning aids are required for purchase.

HTI also provides specialized academic advisors in supplement to the online courses. These certified teachers meet with students at the HTI residence daily to provide one-on-one assistance in each subject area. This allows students to get extra help when needed or move ahead at their own pace. Coaches and academic advisors work closely with administrators at VHS to ensure each student is enrolled in and progressing through necessary courses in order to graduate on time.

Graduation from Virtual High School provides students with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which is accepted for admission at NCAA and CIS universities. Virtual High School fosters student initiative, time management, and independent learning skills that are vital to succeeding in the world today.

In addition to VHS, we also offer an ESL (English as a Second Language) course, which is taught by an Ontario certified ESL teacher. This course helps our international students with written and verbal communication skills, as well as preparation for the TOEFL (English Language Exam), if necessary for admission to their college of choice.

There are also opportunities to prepare for standardized college entrance exams (SAT or ACT). Our tutors arrange a time each week to meet with juniors, seniors, and post-graduate students interested in taking these exams to help familiarize them with content and the test-taking process.
